It was earlier called as Bombay, it is comprised of seven islands, however at present it is no more an island it is like a peninsula. After independence Mumbai slowly rose to an economic power and today it is the most outstanding city in the republic of India. It is a one of the biggest and the best cities of the world, a sort of Gateway of India and the East.
Mumbai is situated on the west coast of India it is India’s financial hub and an active port where ships from all over the world dock. It is a ‘city that never sleeps’ and is the capital city of Maharashtra. Mumbai is a rich mixture of diverse cultures, religions and people. An intrinsic and unique part of Mumbai, are its ‘Dabbawalas’ who deliver home-cooked meals to millions of office–goers.
Places of Interest:
Gateway of India: It was earlier known as Appollo Pier, which was built in the memory of the visit of the late king George and Queen Mary of England.
Prince of Wales Museum: It is a massive building in Indo Saraccnic style housing the Prince of Wales Museum, which was built in the 1914. This museum has three main sections viz. Art, Archaeology and natural history. The paintings of Elephanta, Ajanta and Ellora are also on the view here.
The Jehangir Art Gallery: It is in the compound of the museum. This art gallery in 1952 by the then Chief Minister of Bombay K.G. Kher.
Rajabai Clock Tower: It is one of the most outstanding landmarks of Mumbai. This tower was built by Late Seth Premchand Raichand. The credit of the design and architecture of this monument goes to Sir Gilbert Scott.
Flora Fountain: This place is presently known as Hutatma Chowk. This name is given in the memory of those who died in the formation of Maharashtra State.

Nariman Point: It is generally known as mini Manhattan of four square kilometer. The head office of Air-India, State Bank, Union Bank, Bank of America is all situated here.
Mumbai Municipal Corporation Building: It is a guardian angel over Mumbai and is built in Gothic style. The building was designed by T.W.Stevens and is situated near Victoria Terminus.
Marina Drive: It is one of the best places in Mumbai, and is best to be visited at evening times. The entire drive gets lighted up and it looks like a ‘Queen’s Necklace’.
Taraporewala Aquarium: It is a museum where live fishes are displayed. The tanks in which the fishes are displayed are literally framed and look like pictures formed in Masonite partitions.
Hanging Garden: It is also known as Sir Phirozshah Mehta Gardens. It is constructed on the top of three reservoirs, which store 30 million gallons of water.
Chor Bazar: It is a good place to pick up antique replicas, old chandeliers, brass curios, intricately carved rose wood furnitures and every kind of antique.

Victoria Garden: The garden provides many a convenient place where one can relax or one may wander about watching animals and birds or also enjoy a ride on the camel or the elephant.
Juhu Beach: It is located on the Westside of Santacruz Railway station with attractive swimming facilities. It is one of the best beaches in Mumbai.
Mahalaxmi Temple: The temple of Goddess of Wealth attracts a large number of people. This is one of the famous temples in Mumbai.
Mumbadevi Temple: This temple is situated at Bhuleshwar. Mumbadevi is the goddess of Kolis (Fisherfolk).
